CherryTree 0.37.1 has been released, A GTK text editor and note taking application for the GNU/Linux operating system (Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Elementary OS, Linux Lite, Fedora and Debian Flavours)
CherryTree is an open source and multi-platform application designed from the ground up to be used as a sophisticated and hierarchical note-taking utility under the GNU/Linux platform. It is also compatible with the Microsoft Windows operating systems.

Features at a glance

How to Install CherryTree 0.37.1 on Linux Mint / Ubuntu Derivatives :

Because it is available via PPA, installing CherryTree 0.37.1 on Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial Xerus, Ubuntu 15.10 Wily Werewolf, Ubuntu 15.04, Ubuntu 14.10 and derivative systems is easy. All you have to do is add the ppa to your system, update the local repository index and install the vlc package. Like this:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:giuspen/ppa
update repository ;
sudo apt-get update
Install cherrytree ;
sudo apt-get install cherrytree


After installation is completed, open terminal or seach on ubuntu dashboard to open cherry tree :
sudo cherrytree

To remove, do :

Linux Mint is an open source project that provides users with a completely free and easy to use operating system based on one of the most popular free distributions of Linux, Ubuntu. It includes a plethora of applications for common daily tasks.

The best way to describe the Linux Mint operating system is to image a virtual container where we can install one of the Cinnamon or MATE desktop environments on top of a stable base of Ubuntu, and then add some tweaks and in-house built applications.

Linux Mint is known for being a very user-friendly distribution of Linux used by hundreds of thousands of people, especially those who hate the Unity user interface of Canonical’s Ubuntu operating system.

Distributed as 32-bit and 64-bit Live DVDs with Cinnamon and MATE editions
The project is distributed as separate Cinnamon and MATE editions, each one being available for download as Live DVD ISO images that can be deployed on both 64-bit and 32-bit architectures. Users can write the ISO images to USB sticks or blank DVD discs and boot the live environment from either one instead of installing it.



The boot medium has been engineered to boot automatically in 10 seconds, but advanced users can press any key to access the boot menu, which enables them to run a memory test or start an existing operating system from the local disk drive.

The same bootsplash software that is implemented in Ubuntu is also used in Linux Mint, but customized with the distribution’s logo. It is very important to mention here that both Cinnamon and MATE desktop environments are created by the Linux Mint developers.

Calibre is an open source e-book library management application designed for the 21th century, for the digital world that were are living in right now. Binary install

calibre has a binary install that includes private versions of all its dependencies. It runs on 32-bit and 64-bit Intel compatible machines. To install or upgrade, simply copy paste the following command into a terminal and press Enter:

Dolphin 5.0 is powered by a revitalized dynamic compiler, requires OpenGL 3.x support (or Direct3D 10 on Windows), there is also an experimental D3D12 back-end but not yet any Vulkan back-end. 

Dolphin is an open-source Nintendo GameCube, Wii, and Triforce emulator for Microsoft Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X (Intel-based). It is the first emulator to successfully run commercial GameCube and Wii games. It is still the only emulator capable of running commercial Wii games. Its name gives reference to the Nintendo Dolphin, which was the codename for the GameCube. Dolphin is a community driven project with developers from all over the world who work together to bring you this high-quality software with remarkable features.

At a basic level, Dolphin 5.0 is more accurate and more efficient than previous builds in every way. Individual games will vary, especially due to various hacks being removed along the way. Dolphin 5.0 can be downloaded for Windows and Mac OS X from our official website: dolphin-emu.org.

System Requirements to run Dolphin 5.0 can be found here but here’s a quick rundown of what changed:

  • 64-bit CPUs and Operating Systems are required.
  • Windows XP is no longer supported. Windows Vista is no longer officially supported.
  • Direct3D10/OpenGL3 Required. This means AMD Radeon 4xxx, NVIDIA GeForce 8xxx, or Intel HD 2xxx minimum! Anything older than that will most likely not work or will have significant glitches.

Dolphin on Android is not getting a release build. This does not mean it’s falling behind or anything. We just did not feel like Dolphin on Android has reached any milestone with these changes. We’d rather it have its own special time in the sun when it comes, instead of tagging it onto what has been an already concerted effort on the desktop release.

The developers of Peppermint OS have announced the launch of a new version of the lightweight Ubuntu-based distribution. The new version, Peppermint OS 7, is based on Ubuntu 16.04 and uses LXDE as the default desktop environment. 

 

Peppermint is an open source distribution of Linux based on the Lubuntu operating system, which is an official flavor of the widely used Ubuntu OS built around the lightweight LXDE desktop environment, which is also the default graphical interface for this distro.

  • Along with the shift to the 16.04 (xenial) code base, Peppermint 7 continues our policy of choosing the best components from other desktop environments, wherever that may be, and integrating them into a cohesive whole with our own software.
  • This time around whilst staying with LXDE core session management for lightness and speed, we’ve listened to our users who demanded a more modern, functional, and customizable main menu and switched out lxpanel in favour of the xfce4-panel and whiskermenu. We’ve also added a new ‘Peppermint Settings Panel’ to further consolidate settings into one place.
  • Due to Google’s dropping of 32bit Chrome and move to PPAPI plugins (which effectively ends flash support in 32bit Chromium) we’ve now moved back to the Firefox web browser for the first time since Peppermint One.   • We’ve switched text editors from gedit to pluma because of the odd way gedit now handles windows decoration which leaves it at odds with the rest of the system theming.

Point Linux is an easy-to-set-up-and-use Linux distribution, designed especially for users who are looking for a stable, fast and predictable workstation. It is targeted at experienced users, as well as at the business/IT sector.

Distributed in multiple editions
It is distributed as two editions, Full and Core. While the first one provides users with a complete collection of open source applications and utilities, as well as a full-featured desktop environment, the latter doesn’t include all the apps that are available in the first edition.

It is very important to mention here that while the Full Edition is bundled with proprietary hardware drivers and multimedia codecs, the Core Edition includes only free multimedia codecs and drivers.

Fedora 24 is Released And Available For Download

 
 
 

 

Fedora is an open source Linux distribution based on and sponsored by Red Hat. It is a consumer operating system distributed in different editions. Being based on Red Hat Linux, the distro uses the RPM package manager to install, update and remove packages.

Distributed in multiple editions, as Live CDs or installable DVDs
It provides users with installable-only Live DVD ISO images, as well as Live CDs for each of its custom editions. A very large ISO image with the distro’s sources, as well as the installable DVDs, are available for download in this entry. The latter come with all the desktop environments supported by Fedora and distributed on the separate Live CDs, including GNOME, KDE, Xfce, LXDE, and MATE.

SMPlayer is a very popular open source video playback application that provides a wide range of features. It is based on the MPlayer command-line application and it’s fully compatible with the GNU/Linux and Microsoft Windows operating systems.

The application is basically an advanced GUI (Graphical User Interface) front-end for MPlayer, allowing users to watch movies, TV shows, DVD-Video discs, as well as listen to radio stations, playback music files and view YouTube videos.

It provides users with a familiar user interface, especially if you’ve used the KMPlayer application. While they are both written in Qt and use the KDE runtime libraries, the main difference is that SMPlayer is more advanced than KMPlayer.

Thanks to its built-in codecs, the software can playback various audio and video files formats, including MP3, AVI, MKV, FLAC, OGG, WMV, WMA, MP4, MPEG, MPG, VOB, as well as DVD-Video, VCD, and Audio-CD discs. In addition, it can play TV, radio streams or custom URLs.

Users can quickly choose an audio or subtitle track (if multiple are available) for the currently playing video directly from the main toolbar. Works MKV and AVI files, as well as with DVD-Video discs.

Another cool feature is the ability to seek a video with the mouse wheel, quickly navigating backward or forward in any video. Furthermore, it is possible to adjust the gamma, contrast, brightness, saturation and hue of a video files from the integrated equalizer accessible from the Video menu.
What’s new in SMPlayer 16.6.0
Support for 2 in 1 computers with touch screens:
  • SMPlayer includes now a ‘tablet mode’, available in the menu Options. When the option is turned on it makes some changes in the interface so that it would be easier to control SMPlayer by touching the screen.
  • the size of windows and fonts are increased
  • sliding vertically in the video changes the volume, sliding horizontally seeks in the video
  • tapping while in fullscreen displays the floating control
  • When the user changes the tablet mode in the Windows 10 action center, SMPlayer will detect it and ask if it should switch to the SMPlayer’s tablet mode as well.
 
Send video to an external screen:
  • Now it’s possible to send the video to a second screen connected to the computer, while controlling the application in the computer’s screen.
  • There’s a new option in the menu Video: send video to screen. It shows a submenu with all connected screens.
  • One of the screens is labeled as ‘primary screen’, which is the computer’s screen. If you send the video to another screen the video will be displayed on that screen in fullscreen mode. The SMPlayer interface will remain in the computer’s screen where you can control the video (seek, change volume, subtitles, playlist, open another video, etc.) while the video is displayed on the second screen. If you send the video to the primary screen the video will be re-attached to the SMPlayer window.
  • Note this feature requires the desktop to be set as ‘extended’.
Support for high DPI screens:
  • On high DPI (dots per inch) screens SMPlayer looked very tiny. Now the interface is automatically scaled so it looks correctly. There are also settings in Preferences -> Interface -> High DPI where you can adjust manually the scale factor or turn off this feature.
 
Global shortcuts:
  • Now it’s possible to use the media keys (play/pause, stop, volume+/-, etc.) as global shortcuts. That means that those keys will work even when SMPlayer is in the background. You can activate this option in Preferences -> Keyboard and mouse.
Settings are remembered for online streams too:
  • This means that, for example, SMPlayer can resume playback or set bookmarks on YouTube videos or other online streams (as long as they are seekable).
Other changes in SMPlayer 16.6:
  • New themes: Masalla, Papirus and PapirusDark.
  • Built by default with Qt 5.

$ sudo apt-add-repository ppa:rvm/smplayer

To remove SMPlayer on ubuntu, do :
$ sudo apt-get remove smplayer smplayer-skins smplayer-themes
